If a ball is dropped from a height of 100m, each time it hits the ground it bounces 3/5 of the height it fell. How far will the ball have travelled in the 5th bounce?  Explain HOW you developed your answer.

Parent – teacher conferences are in progress Thursday and Friday.

As a teacher, I love taking a break from the daily classroom activities to sit down and talk to the parents of my students.  The break allows me some time to think about the progress each student is making in my classroom.  I like to share some of the student’s writing, discuss their child’s progress, and collaboratively plan to help their child reach their goals for fifth grade.

Many times, students seem to fear the parent -teacher conferences.  I try to tell my students that these conferences are positive meetings that help the parents and I work together to help the students get the most out of fifth grade.  Hopefully, the students from my room have been honest with their parents about their effort in class, active listening, and other items that help them be successful students.

As each conference ends, I try to make sure that the parents and I are focusing on the same goals for their child.  This plan helps me target my help in the classroom and it gives the parents something to support and watch for at home.

Parents – How would you describe your feelings about conferences?  As a student?  As a parent?  Have those feelings changed over the years?

Did you enjoy Native American Day?

Do you think we should go back to a full day of activities? (Thank you! Ethan for the good question/conversation in the classroom!)

Did the activities help you connect to your current readings in social studies?

Parents, did you have any special days when you were in fifth grade?  Please share some of your memories with us!

Please respond with a well thought answer!  You might be able to convince the fifth grade teachers to return to a full day of activities!

The first problem had many students using the “guess and check” problem solving method to find their solution.  This problem can be solved after a few minutes of G&C but it can also be solved after writing a clever equation.

Double Bonus Points for any student that responses to this problem by using an equation!

Remember, older siblings, parents, and other friends can help you solve this problem!  Please comment with your answer by September 27 to receive the extra credit.  Good Luck!

If you begin with a one digit integer, multiply by 3, add 8, divide by 2 and subtract 6, you will get the integer back.   Find the number.

This year, our school and class are trying to improve our writing.  We are using the six+1 writing traits to guide our writing. Mr. Lund has read numerous of books to us in writing class this week.  Our goal was to think of big ideas for our own writing.  We will use these ideas, memories, and events when we need a topic to write about in the future.  Hopefully, these creative ideas will encourage strong word choices and good writing.

In our writing notebooks, we divided our paper into three categories.  The three columns were labeled “Event,” “Author’s Idea,” and “My Ideas.” Then we used those columns to help us brainstorm and scamper ideas for a story.

Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street is about a girl who thinks nothing exciting happens where she lives.  She gets advice from people on her block and based upon the advice, she creates an extraordinary story from her imagination.  In this book, the author is trying to tell you that you can stretch your imagination into a great story!

In the story, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, the main character is a little mouse that attends school.  Her day is ruined when her favorite purse is taken away because she was distracting the class.  After Lilly and her teacher work things out, she has a new love of school!  The main idea of the book was to learn from your mistakes.

A Bad Case of Stripes is about a girl who turns into different colors, shapes, and sizes because she cared more about what other people thought and did not listen to her own heart.   The author is telling us that it doesn’t matter what other people think.  We shouldn’t make fun of people because they are different than us!

Fireflies is a story about a boy’s love for nature.  He collects fireflies, but cares enough about them to set them free in the end!  The story’s main idea is that you should treat things with respect!

In art class, we are working on a repousse and sculpting with medal and dull colored pencils.  It is like stained glass windows.  The supplies that we are using in art class are metal, paper, and color pencils. You also need a rough draft of a sketch of what ever you of choose. You may only 4 or 6 colors.      What would you draw for this project? Please explain your answer.

Math Challenge Time!

I’d like to challenge the students, parents, and families of my class with an occasional math problem that will require their collective brain power to correctly solve at home.  The rules are simple – solve the problem at home and post your response.  In your response, explain how you solved the problem (What steps did you do?) and why you did it that way (What was your reasoning?)

I will not post your comments until next Tuesday at which time; I will also reveal the correct solution.  Each correct post will receive five extra credit points!

Good Luck!

Math Challenge #1

Divide the face of the clock into three parts with two lines so that the

sums of the numbers in the three parts are equal.

*************************************************************************************************

Solution! – Solution!- Solution! – Solution! – Solution! – Solution! – Solution! – Solution!

*************************************************************************************************

Congrats to Jocelyn, Jarrett, Aaron, and Beth (Mr. Lund’s sister!) for correctly answering Math Challenge #1!

They correctly submitted the correct answer to the first math word problem!  I liked how Jocelyn and Aaron used the guess and check method to solve the problem; while, Jarrett started with a more organized method to solve the problem.  I liked how he found the sum of the numbers on a clock and then divided to find out what the total would be in each section – clever!

Parents,

A classroom newsletter will be going home on Monday, September 8.  The newsletter highlights the activities we’ve been working on in our classroom.

This week we will have our first student of the week – Brooke – posting to the classroom blog.  Watch for her posts about the daily events occurring in our classroom and school.  I think it should be interesting to read a student’s point of view of these events!

Please feel free to leave comments and/or questions for our student posters to read and reply to in the blog.  Remember, one of the goals of the classroom blog is to increase communication BETWEEN school and home.
