Mr. Lund's Blog – The Learning Never Ends In Fifth Grade!
Scenario: While checking out at the grocery store, in the self check out line, you find someone’s change left in the register, $8 to be exact. Do you a) turn in the money or b) take the money and run?

I would not take the money because, the money is not mine. I would get in trouble if someone was watching me and get very mad. I would probably have to go find the person and return the money. If I did take the money like I said before I would get in trouble, banned from the store maybe. There’s lots of other bad things that could happen but I’m not going to say them all. If I saw anyone do this like a friend of mine I would rush over and tell them give that money to someone who works here. If someone caught you stealing the money you would be knowen as a thief because, only robbers and thiefs steal money and other things that are worth a lot of money. That’s why you should never steal or take stuff.

I really love money a lot!! I wish I could take it but I knew that would be the wrong thing to, and like Beth said you would be a bad person who robs and is a theif. I wouldn’t want to be that person in the future and would never do such a thing!!! I know that lesson and the bad thing that happens as well and wouldn’t want to go through that situation. Anyways if I saw the money I would give it to the person if I saw them leave or if they left anyway I would give it to the cashier. That’s what I would do if I saw the money. Also Mr.Lund you should check your wallet once in a while incase I might get to it! I’m just kidding around!

I would turn the money in and not be a thief. I would get in big trouble by my parents. Like Beth said you might be banned from the store. That would not be a good thing. So if you are ever in this situation you should always turn it in!!

I would turn in the money because like everyone else I wouldn’t want to get in trouble and it’s only 8 bucks! Beside it’s stealing and stealing is not a good trait to have. So stealing is wrong. How would you feel if you lost 8 bucks and somehow saw another person steal it? You’d feel pretty bad wouldn’t you? So just imagine how that person would feel. LIke Beth and Ryan said if someone caught you you’d be in some deep, deep dodo. Like Marisa said money is great but if it’s not yours then don’t take it and like I said earlier it’s only 8 bucks. That’s why I wouldn’t take the the money and why you shouldn’t either.

Easton,
You make several good points. Would this situation be different if there was $3 left at the checkout?

Kylie,
Isn’t taking something that isn’t yours stealing? Would you be upset if you were the person that left the money and returned to find out that someone took it? – Mr. Lund

That’s a good response for handling the situation with money Easton.

I would turn in the money because if I didn’t I would be known as thief. Like Beth said I probably would be banned from the specific store. If I turned in the money I wouldn’t have to worry about the bad things that could happen to me. So never steal stuff from places or from anyone except if it’s for fun with your family or friends.

If this were to happen to me, this is what I would do…….honestly! If I noticed the money right away, I’d immediately look for the person who had been at the register before me to tell them they forgot their change. If the money had been left there a while, I’d let one of the clerks know. Since they probably wouldn’t be able to locate the person who the money belonged to – I’d suggest giving it to a charity. There’s usually some sort of charity going on if you look closely, ie, Salvation Army, donations at the checkout, etc. When you are put in a situation where you have to decide between right and wrong, remember doing the right thing always makes you feel so much better than doing the wrong thing.
