Reading Update…

Bio-Folders!

American Tall Tales!

Writing Our Own Illinois Tall Tales!

Readers’ Theatres!

Science Fiction Unit!

Paper Bag Book Report!

Lunch Bunch Book Club!

The class have been busy during our reading time each day!  The students just presented their bio-folders to the class.  The kids loved to hear about the different people and have been browsing the folders hanging in the classroom!

Our study of American Tall Tales is almost over.  We’re wrapping up the unit by making claymation videos of our favorite tall tales.  While we’re working on this project, the class will be writing their own tall tales based on some interesting ”period” photos that have some unusual exaggerations!

The students have also been working on fluency by performing some creative tall tale stories!  To share their stories, two of our groups were able to Skype a kindergarten classroom!  Both classes were excited to use this technology to share and listen to some great stories!

Our next reading unit will be a new one for Mr. Lund.  We’ll be exploring a science fiction novel while using small groups to explore the science and technology which is key to these novels!  I’m excited to see how the students react to this topic!

While we’re doing the science fiction unit, the students will be independently reading a novel to share with the class.  We’re calling this the Paper Bag report.  The students will have to have their novel selected by this Friday!  Ask to see the rubric and required bookmarks that were discussed in class!  You can also search the blog for a video of a paper bag book report given last year by one of my students!

AND>>>> The students have been asking for another Lunch Bunch Book Club!  I’ve selected another novel and will be starting this book soon!  I’ve love to have some parents or relatives join us for this lunch discussion.  The only requirement is that you read half the book by our first lunch bunch meeting and that you finish the novel by our last lunch bunch meeting.  We meet in the class, enjoy our lunches (and a dessert provided by Mr. Lund!), and discuss the book!  Last lunch bunch we also had some special guests join us including Mrs. Larson and Mrs. Moody!

The NOVEL is…………..

    Lexie,

Should we hand out the books this week and plan to meet before break and then finish the book after break? Or should we meet after break twice?

Do you think I should give the students bookmarks or sticky notes to help them record their thoughts?

    Thank you for your advice!

I would absoloutley love to join the bookclub!!! I didnt’t get to read this book because our class had different groups, one group reading a book with Mrs.Klinner in 4th grade and one group with my 4th grade teacher Mrs.Haugens. I read something else so don’t worry I don’t even know the secrets in the book! I also think this will be a book about a boy who has never been in his attic and checks it out and finds a magical castle. He will find all kinds of people and places. The boy could probably make wishes that hes always wanted to do! That’s what I think the book will be about! I also can’t wait to eat Mr.Lunds’ yummy and fantastic tasty treats!! You make great treats Mr.Lund and I can’t wait to see everybody at the bookclub who joins!

    Marisa,

Great! I thought you might have read the book already in fourth grade! I’m excited that you want to be apart of the book club! Did the other kids in your class like the book? Why didn’t you find it in the library and read it on your own?

I know your Mom is in our school often, do you think she’d want to join us for this novel discussion?

I would love to join the book club! I haven’t heard about this book before so it will be interesting to read without knowing anything about it. I think it will be about a boy that finds a toy castle in his attic and imagines a magical land like the velveteen rabbit. I really look forward to reading this book and eating the delicious treats!!!

I would absolutely love to start reading our second book of our book club!! I think it will be about a magical castle that appears in the attic that a boy discovers. I usually don’t like fantasy books, but this one looks likes like a really interesting book by the picture on the cover. Can’t wait to start the book!

    Hi~
I am looking forward to reading The Castle in the Attic! This book was written when I was six years old and I can remember seeing it my school library as a kid. I predict that the boy finds an old magic castle while digging through the attic because most people keep old stuff in their attics.
    Happy Reading! Mrs. Moody

Wow! Your book club sounds like a lot of fun! I agree that it looks like there are characters in the castle that will come to life. Some of the students in my class just read a book about a dollhouse that had dolls coming to life. The dolls were trying to get a message to a girl in the book about a murder mystery. I wonder if the people in the castle have a story to tell also?

Your science fiction unit looks very interesting too! Will you be reading about any robots? We have been reading some short articles about new robot technology. We read about a robot named Kismet that could mimic voice and facial expressions. We also read about nanotechnology, robots that actually may soon be able to go into the human body to help unclog arteries and kill cancer cells. We would love to hear about the latest technology you are learning about in your small groups!

Let me know when you will be starting your lunch group. Will Mr. Lund be bringing his famous truffles??

I really hope I’m in your class next year. Ryan has told me a lot about your class like The Legand Of Slappy Hooper. If we do the Bio folders I will be Adrian Peterson, or Rosa Parks. I really want to do the book talks, it makes me very anxious. When I got on your videos the thumb wrestling looked fun. Ryan said he didn’t do the best! So I really hope I’m in your class.

I really can’t wait tell we come back to school to have awesome treats and great friends to enjoy them with! Thanks Mr.Lund for picking a awesome book for an awesome class.
